Goodwin's music theory
Goodwin suggestsed that music videos include 6 aspects that can be seen in music videos, and these should be considered in the production, and the analysis of music videos, the 6 aspects are as follows:
-Music videos show genre conventions and characteristics of the genre.
-There is a distinct relationship between the lyrics and the visuals in the music video.
-There will be a clear relationship between the music and the visuals, and the atmosphere created through the visuals would reflect
-Music videos tend to show the demands of the record label, with the use of recurring visual motifs, relating to either the label, or the band, as a way to promote te band/artist. There is also a demand for many close ups to promote the artist/band.
-There is often a notion of 'looking' in music videos, this may be shown through mirrors, screens, and stages. There may also a voyeuristic treatment of the female body, which can also reference Laura Mulvey's theory about 'the male gaze'.
-Many music videos show intertextuality, as they make reference to other music videos, films, TV shows, etc.
A music video that shows a distinct relationship between the lyrics and the visuals is Riptide by Vance Joy, this video follows.

The music video for 'riptide shows a a close relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, as the song states "I was scared of dentist's and the dark" whilst showing a woman in a dentist's chari, and a lampshade swinging in a darkened room. There is also a clear relationship between the visuals and the music, as a suitcase is shown to being filled with items in conjunction with the timing of the song. There aren't any motifs persay in the music video, and the singer (James Keogh) only appears a few times, therefore the artist isn't being exhibited explicitly, and the music video was produced for more artistic reasons. The song falls into the folk genre, and therfore shows genre conventions with the use of open spaces and countryside settings, this is also shown with the woman running within the overgrown grass. The notion of 'looking' is shown in the music video, as the woman are seen to be looking off into the distance towards the riptide perhaps.
