Music channels

Mtv's first broadcast

MTV (Music television) was first broadcasted on August 1st, 1981, and is available on Sky, Virgin, Freeview and BT.

Their target audience is typically young adults with interest in music, and everything it involves, rather than just showing music videos, they also have interviews with featured artists, commentaries, music-related newscast etc. Although aimed at young adults, it is viewed most frequently viewed on BBC1 (according to most recent BARB statistics- August 2015) which is a channel not aimed at younger adults, therefore commenting on the way Mtv has brought the enjoyment of music to a new generation. It is clear that Mtv is aimed, primarily, at young adults, as the bold colours and graphics used between shows, and the wild and upbeat nature of the show evokes a certain youthful quality. Young adults also account for the highest users of mobile devices, which Mtv is available on, showing that this is their target audience. Mtv’s most frequently played genre is pop and house music, which is statistically listened to most by young adults, this caters to their needs and desire to listen to this genre, which gives them a chance to listen to new, up-coming songs.

Although Mtv prides itself on being for the younger generation, they don’t play modern music exclusively, as they would endeavour to try and cater to many types of possible audiences, though this is difficult with the growing trend of online streaming, and digital sales, as older generations aren’t typically ‘technology-minded’ whereas younger generations appear to be technology novice’s, as they grow up with the continuously developing technological world, this therefore makes sense for Mtv to continuously develop their branding, and their technology platforms, as they will be able to penetrate each aspect of their audience’s lives, so that Mtv features in it, and plays a more vital role in their day-to-day lives. Mtv is a multi-media platform, which brings music, and music-related shows to a music-loving audience, however the producers don’t exclusively cater to the needs and demands of the music-loving, but also the music novice, as they present shows in such a way that could appeal to those who are fans of music, and would like to extend their knowledge of the music industry further, and would like to hear more from their preferred artists, but without the technical jargon used within the music industry, that may be daunting to those who are new to the music industry terms, and the different levels of production, along with what they entail, and what they require from other levels of production, to not only complete their job successfully, but to also give its audience an enjoyable experience whilst consuming the music, and music-related shows. Mtv is watched widely across the world, and originated in America in 1981, it has since become a highly televised, and entirely enjoyable platform for all types of audiences to view and consume media in their desired format; where some choose to use the Mtv app, others would be happier to consume Mtv media by watching the shows via a television, or device, this has enabled Mtv to become the highest rated media platform industry channel across America and England.
