Rihanna Digipak analysis
The digipak for Rihanna's album 'Loud' features a vast amount of red, and this can be noticed at first glance, the use of red suggests that the songs that feature on the album are full of passion, as her lyrics are deep and meaningful.
The close up of Rihanna's face allows consumers to empathise with her, and shows a deep and thoughtful facial expression, this also adds to the idea that the music is emotive and meaningful, as the close up creates intense focus, and draws attention to her face. The use of the close ups also shows the record label almost advertising the artist, as she is the main focus behind with the music, this also gives exposure to Rihanna, as people will essentially be 'buying her'.
The use of roses creates a sense of love and passion, as these are a typical symbol for love (especially on Valentine's Day). This creates an association between this album, and the day, this could be used as a marketing ploy, where the album was released near February 14th, in order to sell more copies in a short period of time.
The inside cover relates directly to a song that features in the album 'Only girl in the world', this forms a preconceived idea about what type of songs the album includes, and how this works in unison with the theme of the album.
The positioning of Rihanna in the inside fold shows her almost delicately draped over the roses, this presents her as natural and emotive, as she appears to be stuck in a type of emotional turmoil.
The font used on the CD cover is used to present the idea that her music, much like Rihanna, is natural, thought-provoking, and emotive, this compliments the theme in the entire digipak, as she is presented as such. The font is also white which suggests that Rihanna is pure and innocent, and the music within the album is the same. The name of the album 'Loud' appears to contradict the themes that run through the digipak, as the title suggests that the tracks that feature will be loud and upbeat, however this is not the case. The contradiction that is present can also relate to the contradiction between Rihanna's old music, which was upbeat and preppy, with this album, which features a vast amount of slower ballads, and love songs, this is used to promote Rihanna's move from the classic pop tracks, into music that is deeply rooted in meaning, and that is thought-provoking.
