Intertextuality

Inertexuality refers to how certain media texts may influence other forms of media, for example, music videos may make references to other films, or pieces of literture, examples can be seen below.

Intertextuality doesn't necessarily have to be when a film is the inspiration for a music video or media text, but can also be present through the use of another media text which influences the media presented, as though the influence isn't always explicit, but can often be discrete.

The music video for Iggy Azalea- Fancy draws on the film Clueless, by using similar costumes, settings and narrative structure.

The music video for 'Listen to the man' by George Ezra features actor Sir Ian McKellen, this isn't an explicit form of intertexuality in the way that Fancy by Iggy Azalea utilized intertexuality, however does portray the intertextuality with the use of an actor in the music video. This could be beneficial to George Ezra as well as Ian McKellen, as McKellen fans would watch the video for him, which could also increase the number of views the music video recieves, therefore is beneficial to both actor, and singer.

Similarly to George Ezra and Ian McKellen, the music video for Carly Rae Jepson-I really like you also includes an actor who mimes some of the lyrics. Tom Hanks features in the music video alongside Carly and Justin Beiber, who found Carly Rae Jepson. The inclusion of such artists creates mutal benefits for both artists, and Hanks, as well as increasing the amount of views the music video recieves, as audiences would tend to watch to view the music video for entertainment, and a middle-aged man (such as Tom Hanks) miming the lyrics to a pop song offers the comic fodder.

The music video for Telephone by Lady Gaga also features intertextuality, the car that is used in the video is the same car used in the film Kill Bill, this is used to create a connection between the film, and the music video. The car used in the film is an iconic piece of film memorabilia, therefore using it in a music video will allow the film to recieve attention, as well as the song, which will enforce audiences to create a sub-conscious link between the two.

The music video for Sam Smith- Love me again draws on the concept of Romeo and Juliet, as the video appears to depict a fueding family, and a couple from each side of the fued, of whom are in love, the music video shows the two sides and the loving couple, who come to their tragic end upon their escape.

The music video for Shania Twain's song 'Man I feel like a woman' is similar to Robert Palmer's 'Addicted to love', which featured a Palmer with a group of mindless women playing guitar's, whereas Shania's video features herself and a droup of mindless men playing the guita. This highlights the lyrical content of Shania's song, as she defies convention, tipping a patriarchical society on it's head.

Family Guy intertextuality

Family Guy is most known for recreating films, and creating parodies based around them, the clip below shows a scene from Family Guy's parody of the worldwide hit 'Taken'

Family Guy has also tapped into the huge success of the Star Wars trilogy, and has created, and is therefore a form of intertextuality, as the episodes have been influenced by the global film.
